Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection Conference 2012, 8-10 March 2012, Bangkok, Thailand0
“If the misery of the poor be caused not by the laws of nature, but by our institutions, great is our sin.”
Charles Darwin
The topic of this Conference is inspired by unequal distribution of resources that causes poverty and vulnerability of people. Poor people are especially vulnerable, they have few buffers or resources to cope with hazards or shocks. Yet they are significantly more likely to be affected by ill-health, unemployment, trade shocks, climate change, famine or conflict. Sustainable poverty reduction can only be achieved and managed effectively if vulnerability is better understood.
This Conference aims to identify and develop responses to vulnerability that gives greater agency and voice to the vulnerable and the poor, and engages policymakers and practitioners.
